Soap, Incense, & Candles Ingredient Information

Soap & Body Products

  • Monster soap was born out of determination for self-love.

Lydia got started soaping over 6 years ago as a way to regain control of their body while living in a hostile environment. It allowed a sense of control & self-care at a time where little of either was often allowed. Their first soap was a simple 100% coconut oil recipe… and from there, it slowly snowballed into more and more complex, hand-made recipes meant to invoke the monsters they love so dearly.

  • All of Lydia’s recipes are hand made from scratch with high quality ingredients and made in very small batches, often 15 lbs at a time.

The process of making monster soap is a science experiment! A variety of soft oils, hard fats, water, and lye are mixed together in stainless steel pots. When lye is added, it begins the chemical process of saponification.

Once the soap batter begins its chemical process, it thickens. The pots of batter are poured into pine wood boxes in long loaves, then left to incubate on a heating pad to go through a chemical reaction called gel phase.

Once the loaf has finished its main chemical reaction over a few days, Lydia slides the loaves out of their molds to sit. In a few more hours time, they’ll be put on the trusty guillotine, Barghest, and sliced into bars!

From there, they’re stamped, placed into an antique-style pie safe to cure for 3 months, then hand-packaged for sale.

  • Did you know soap has to reach an age similar to cheese before it should be used?

Soap fresh out of the loaf is harsh, as it takes one month for the lye to fully deactivate. Though you could safely use it at that point, it can be a bit harsh on the skin. The longer you let it sit, the more mellow it becomes. One of the benefits of soap is that it doesn’t really ‘go bad’ or melt, unlike cheese!

Coyoteprince’s monster soaps are cured for 3 months in an antique-style pie safe to make sure they reach a perfect, mellow maturity before sale & use.

  • As of 2022 Lydia sought out to craft their own home studio brewed beer. Using an English amber ale recipe tweaked specifically for use in soap, it is made in 1-gallon amounts at a time with fresh ingredients (never a kit!) and hand-bottled. Lovingly named Haunted Hound Amber Ale after Lydia’s devotion to the black shuck, it is, to our knowledge the first and only soap configured specifically for soap and used solely in Coyoteprince’s monster soaps!

You may be asking: Why use beer in soap?
Beer soap is Lydia’s all-time favorite, and we hope it’ll become yours as well. The addition of beer to the soap batter adds luscious, soft bubbles, a silky feel, and natural color. And not to worry- no beer scent remains in the soap once it’s made!

 FAQs

  • The fragrance oils used are created by a small East-coast based company and are high quality, mixed from a combination of synthetic and essential oils. Some of my fragrances are hand mixed by myself. Either way, all fragrances used are skin safe and do not contain harmful ingredients like formaldehyde!

You can find the current list of fragrances here.

  • You won’t find any LAKE dyes here. We rely on the natural color of the soap batter, skin-safe mica mined from the earth, activated charcoal, clay, herbs, & spices to naturally color our monster soaps.

  • All our oils are sourced from high quality, eco conscious companies.

Coconut oil, sweet almond oil, and castor oil are our three signature staples! We do not use palm oil due to the environmental impacts the harvesting causes.

  • LYE ✦ This is what turns fats into soap! You cannot make true soap without it, as the addition of lye is what creates the chemical reaction of fats into soap. Though it must be listed in the ingredient list, no lye remains in the final product.

SALT ✦ Used to harden bars. In the case of soleseife bars like Siren Song, it also gives a silky feel!

WATER ✦ Part of the base chemicals to make soap. We only used distilled water.

BEER ✦ Used as a natural colorant and to boost bubbles. As of 2022, We use only our own in-studio brewed amber ale!

PUMPKIN & OTHER PUREES ✦ Used as a natural colorant and for how they make the final soap feel, all organic.

COCONUT MILK ✦ Used for a silky feel, organic.

MICA ✦ Not considered by the FDA as a 'natural' ingredient, but is a skin-safe, colorful mineral mined from the Earth. See Colorant section for more info.

ACTIVATED CHARCOAL ✦ A skin-safe charcoal that is used as a natural colorant.

CLAYS ✦ Used as a natural colorant and the silky feel they give. Kaolin is also used to naturally help scents last.

ALLSPICE, ALMOND MEAL, TEA LEAVES, ETC ✦ Used as a skin exfoliant, a natural colorant, and/or for visuals.

PINE TAR ✦ Created from the sap of pine, this is a traditional soap ingredient used as both a colorant and natural fragrance. It smells similar to a campfire.

HONEY & BEESWAX ✦ As of 2022, we use honey/wax sourced only from local, small bee keepers & farmers based in the Georgia mountains.

  • All ingredients We use are veggie based unless otherwise mentioned. You can check to see if a specific soap you're considering is fully vegetarian or not by checking the description.

HONEY & BEESWAX ✦ We use honey/wax sourced from local, small bee keepers & farmers in the Georgia mountains.

LARD ✦ Used as an oil replacement for those sensitive to coconut oil & to harken to traditional soap recipes. As of 2022, lard is being phased out of our ingredient lists.

  • Self-taught through resources online and many, many, many hours of trial and error.

  • Only if you don’t respect it! Lye is needed to make real soap- it’s the main culprit behind the chemical reaction of soaponification- which is what turns a bowl of fats into soap. Once the soap has gone through its cure period, no lye remains in the finished product.

  • Soap is very similar to baking! Depends on the recipe, your experience, and if you have someone to guide you.

Production soaping like I do & crafting all your recipes from the ground up is incredibly labor-intensive. Prices for handmade soap reflect this.

  • I don’t often have the extra time to take on custom soap orders. All my soap requires 3 months cure period, and the larger the batch, the more time is needed to get it all complete. A deposit and a reasonable turn-around time is required.
If you want to inquire for a custom order of soap for a small event or similar, reach out via email and I’ll see what I can do. Expect $100 for the smallest order.

  • I can’t make any medical claims, sorry. It’s just nice goth soap to get you clean.

  • Our monster soaps have scents that bring about the feeling of mystery, magic, and comfort- so lots of incense and earthy notes. On top of that, we disregard the practice of gendering scents, so if you like incensy-types and are tired of gendered soaps, we recommend just picking one at random or ordering a sample!

Incense & Candles

Information

  • HONESTY

Did you know that incense is unregulated within the US, and as such is usually made with low-quality, cheap, and even outright toxic ingredients, not actually intended to be burned?

Mx. Lydia wasn’t keen on that, and so set out to craft their own incense with natural ingredients and an honest look at what’s inside. We always make your ingredient lists easy to find and have carefully tested every blend.

    QUALITY

Only high quality, raw, natural resins and herbs are used in our incense, and local beeswax or bayberry wax in our candles. Unlike the dipped incense you’ll usually find, our incense pass through skilled hands. View “why does your incense cost more than dipped incense” in the FAQ for more info!

    LOVE FOR THE PAST

We use a variety of antique tools throughout the process to make our craft more special, give new life to still perfectly usable tools, and and pay homage to the past. We are a proponant of reduce, reuse, recycle, and try to avoid superfluous mass produced items by instead adopting antiques that still have life in ‘em.

Our candle-making is also rooted in this curiosity of how things were done in by-gone days- think of it as living archeology with a hint of witchcraft.

  • Natural incense is completely different from dipped.

Due to most incense being cut with toxic-upon-combusting ingredients like formaldehyde-infused wood and DPG, dipped incense is notorious for causing headaches and coughing fits.

With how much careful research has gone into our hand rolled incense, we only picked the safest ingredients to create a significantly healthier and more enjoyable experience.

If you think you hate incense because of the intense fragrance or annoying smoke, give natural incense a try- you’ll likely find it doesn’t act as an irritant!

Another notable difference is that a natural incense’s true fragrance won’t be detectable until its lit! To light, you also need to hold a flame to it for several seconds for it to catch.

  • Our incense and dipped candles are a perfect match if you simply want to enjoy a pleasant aroma in your personal space or want to clear out some other lingering odors. But for those spiritually-inclined, our incense and candles (as with everything in our mercantile) was created thoughtfully, with connection to Lydia’s own personal spiritualism.

All four incense blends were carefully blended to invoke the image of some familiars found in European magic (hare, salamander, goat, and crow) and the four seasons. You may have also noticed on each label a common symbol of a witch’s altar accompanies the familiar. (cauldron, knife, candle, and bell)

Within the studio, there’s some hard rules in place during every step of production: Made only in micro batches and with a clear, relaxed mind to maintain positive energy throughout. The process of making our incense and candles is a spiritual practice in itself, and we hope it can be a part of yours as well!

  • INCENSE

We work our incense from the ground up. Our ingredients arrive in a mix of pre-powdered and in a completely unprocessed form, so the first step is for Mx. Lydia to hand-powder the aromatic resins and herbs.

From there, all powders are measured out into an antique wash basin and thoroughly mixed dry, sifted, then mixed again.

Our own studio-brewed amber ale is cut into the dry powder and kneaded by hand until it forms a dough.

From there, it is rolled onto thin wood sticks or pressed into our own custom made cone mold, then set aside for curing.

All sticks and cones are stored inside our hand made mini curing safe, modeled off pie safes from the 17th to 19th centuries. In here, they’re allowed to dry slowly with the scent of the aromatics mellowing together over a period of a month.

    CANDLES

Beeswax and/or bayberry wax (both natural waxes) is heated and natural hemp wick is hung on a homemade chandler hanger. The wick is dipped into the wax, then cold water, back and forth until the desired thickness is reached.

Antique scissors & knives are used to flatten the bottoms and from here, the finished candles are placed in a candle box to cure for a few months time. Like soap and incense, allowing candles to age a bit before use makes them better!

  • For both incense & candles

Do not burn around pets or children.
Always make sure there is adequate airflow when burning- crack a window and make sure the space isn’t too enclosed.
Never leave a burning flame unattended.
Never leave a burning candle or incense on or around combustible items such as fabrics and chemicals.

FAQs

  • “hand dipped” is often used to give the illusion of being high quality to consumers, yet its anything but in most cases.

    HAND DIPPED

Unscented ‘punk’ sticks are left to soak in fragrance oil then dried. This is why so much incense you find is a punch to the nose and has odd scents like ‘raspberry cheesecake’.

Many synthetic fragrance oils are perfectly safe to burn and some people even use essential oils. However, with incense being unregulated, a lot of cost-cutting measures tend to be employed.

Not everyone uses burn-safe fragrances, punk sticks are often made from sawdust scrap from mill yards which may contain formaldehyde, and these types of incense tend to be very cheap because the fragrance oil is usually cut with an oil known as DPG- which according to its chemical safety sheet, isn’t intended to be burned!

This type of incense is notorious for causing headaches and its no wonder why- your body is reacting to an irritant that’s not fit for burning.

    HAND ROLLED

Our incense is made completely from scratch, using our own carefully tested blend of natural aromatics to make the incense dough. A lot of research has gone into these, and we only picked ingredients that are naturally aromatic and considered safe to burn. We don’t add fillers, synthetics, or work from a pre-made base.

You can learn more about how our incense is made in the handmade process drop down.

  • The most commonly found incense in the US- such as found head shops and ren fairs- is dipped, created with cheap materials, and made to get a quick, easy monetary return.

The incense we create is nothing like that.

Without a doubt, Coyoteprince Studio’s natural incense is leagues above any old hand dipped incense. Buying raw, high quality resins and herbs, powdering some in-studio, blending the dry ingredients by hand, then hand rolling the dough into the finished piece comes with a much higher upfront cost than buying some blanks and throwing them into some aroma oil, cut further with cheap oil.

As with everything in our mercantile- lot of work, care, and love goes into this. You’re paying for fine ingredients, skilled hands, and a careful eye!

  • Currently, there are no plans for this- mainly due to my own lack of interest and the studio storage space already being strained.

  • SMELL

Natural incense is much more gentle than the punch of dipped incense. It also smells a bit different in-package- the true scent won’t come out until you light it!

    LIGHTING

Natural incense is also harder to light than dipped incense due to the makeup of the dough. Hold your lighter to it for several seconds and it will eventually catch.

If your incense was left out somewhere with excess moisture, be sure to place it somewhere dry for a week or two before attempting to burn.

  • Though natural incense is significantly healthier, we don’t advise this. Pet (and children’s) lungs are much more sensitive than a human adult’s.

People who are asthmatic may find natural incense to not be irritating, but it depends on the severity of their condition. You can buy samples of our incense to test. If any irritation occurs, stop use immediately.
